Winter – What clothing to wear

Fri 18th November 2016

We are often asked, “What winter clothing should I wear?” We reply that multiple warm layers are essential.

Winter is a great time to get onto the water. Here are some suggestions to help you prepare for your trip.

Clothing suggestions

The aim is to wear lots of layers and a windproof coat. The layers trap pockets of air, which your body can warm up. This warm air doesn’t escape because of the outer windproof layer.

  • Base thermal layer, if you have it or an extra ‘vest’ and ‘Long Johns’ type layer
  • Warm long sleeved top, thick trousers and fleece/jumper
  • An extra fleece jumper
  • Two pairs of socks (not too tight as you want to trap pockets of air)
  • Study shoes or boots
  • A warm scarf, wrap or Buff which can cover your nose
  • A warm hat
  • Gloves (Touch screen glove for sale in the RibRide, Porth Daniel Office £2.50)

We provide the life jacket.

If it is a cold day then going fast on a boat will always feel even colder because of the ‘wind chill’. The ‘wind chill’ is often referred to as the ‘feels like’ temperature in the weather forecast. The ‘wind chill’ factor takes into account wind speeds and humidity.

The ‘feels like’ temperature is especially important on windy days. The wind speeds up the evaporation of moisture from skin. The stronger the wind or faster the boat travels, the faster your skin will cool.

If you wear the right winter clothing you will maintain the warm air around your body and keep warm.
There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing!

RIB” roaringly good! by Spamette, Yorkshire, 17 November 2016
Tom took us out on a cold and miserable day but it was still the most fun I’ve had in ages!
There was the obvious high speed fun but also history, wildlife and general information about the area.
I’m already planning to return for one of the longer tours in May when we return to Anglesey.”

Went on a chilly, miserable November day but this did not detract at all from the enjoyment.
An hour of a mixture of high speed thrills and sightseeing with information given by skipper Tom.
Had a great time and would recommend it to anyone visiting the area.
We’ll certainly be back on our next visit.
