Snowdonia and Isle of Anglesey Boat Trips
Phil Scott and Tom Ashwell have been running RibRide Adventure Boat Tours for over 12 years. What is is about them that makes RibRide such a success?
“We are dedicated watermen who enjoy living and working on the Strait. Aspiring to offer much more than safe, enjoyable and top-quality adventure boat trips. Getting your family and friends on the water with private charters and we create and deliver challenging corporate training days and events,” says Skipper Phil Scott, RibRide Adventure Boat Tours.
The team has three businesses that operate from Porth Daniel, Menai Bridge:
The entrepreneurial pair’s background is firmly in sailing.
Skipper Phil says:
“We work hard to reduce our environmental impact with efficient systems, good training, good equipment and listening to good advice.
Our economic approach is not to skimp on important things. We charge reasonable rates, are honest with customers and pay staff well. It is fantastic to among the first Blue Flag marine operators in Europe. We are looking forward to sustaining the award for many years to come.”

Phil was inspired by his father, who took him dinghy racing on the River Tyne as a very small child. He was a member of the North of England Sailing Team during his teenage years and crewed in the Tall Ships, Australia 1988, becoming a sailing instructor at Calshot. While studying for a Sport Science degree at Bangor University, he was a member of the Royal Anglesey Yacht Club, racing Fifes. He went on to coach the National Windsurfing and Sailing Squad in his role as the Head of Windsurfing at Plas Menai.
Whilst on honeymoon in the Caribbean, he decided to relocate there for sun, sea, sailing and adventure. He worked in the Caribbean charter world for eight years. On his return to Anglesey, while renovating his farmhouse, he worked driving the Council’s safety RIB. It was then he realised that the coast of Anglesey was an amazing place to explore by RIB and he decided to set up a RIB business.
Tom, at the age of seven, was inspired by a super-cool sailing instructor when his parents booked him a sailing course on Ullswater. He trained as an instructor whilst at school and was aiming to get a commission in the Royal Marines, motivated by his introduction to RIBs as a cadet. A career curve-ball was thrown when he was offered the chance to go to Turkey to make some yacht deliveries. There he was tempted away by the sailing and sunshine and remained for a few seasons as an instructor.
America then beckoned him as a sailing coach at Cornell University, New York. Summers in the notorious Hood River Gorge honed his skills and notoriety in windsurfing competitions, leading to a Caribbean charter trip as a guest windsurfing coach. Here he realised he wanted to do more than scratch a living as a sailing instructor, so he sat the commercial yacht captain’s exams. He worked for 12 years, with his wife Nicki, as a yacht skipper to the rich and famous on some infamous catamarans in many of the world’s seas.
Phil and Tom became business partners because they are both mad about sailing, RIBs and windsurfing; it also helped that their wives became great friends. Bethan and Nicki run a successful renovation management and interior design company, Synergy Interiors, on Anglesey.
RibRide was formed in 2005. They began launching RIBs from the Victoria Dock in Caernarfon. They then relocated to the Moel y Don jetty, Anglesey, in 2007, moving to Porth Daniel, Menai Bridge in early 2014.
RibRide has consistently received great reviews from its RIB Riders on TripAdvisor, and has achieved certificates of excellence from 2012 to 2015.
Anyone, any age from 4 years old, can book a place on an adventure boat tour from our regular departure locations. RibRide also offers the option of chartering a RIB for the whole day to go around Anglesey or to chill out on a secluded beach. Talk to us and you can ‘BOOK THE WHOLE BOAT’.
“RibRide is not about going fast on the Strait. The real adventure comes when we take the time to explore the coast, discussing points of interest, helping everyone to understand the natural beauty of the coastline. Our RIBs are fast and fun but we exceed our RIB Riders’ expectations by drawing on our sailing experiences and understanding of the environment to embrace the natural and cultural values of this amazing area,” says Tom.
In 2014, Phil and Tom began work on creating the fastest performance cruising carbon-fibre multihull in the world. They formed Vantage Catamarans and have assembled a world-leading team of experts to build a globetrotting boat that will be challenging and fun to sail. It is designed to perform and excite http://www.vantage-catamarans.com/.
